Deltona Area Guide
Deltona, a planned urban community, enjoys the best of all worlds. Small enough for residents to know their neighbors by name, and big enough to be able to boast the amenities of the big city, Deltona is a great place to work, live and play. Located strategically between Daytona Beach and Orlando, Deltona offers residents a great commuting spot for people who work in either city. With a current population of 84,264, Deltona is the largest municipality in Volusia County, offering the ease of commuting along with a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big city. When Florida became a state in 1845, traffic increased to the heretofore largely unknown area, steamboats making regular trips up the St. Johns River to Lake Monroe. A small community began to form, called Enterprise, and the little town soon had its own schoolhouse and two churches. Around that same time (1871), Frederick DeBary, a wine magnate from New York, erected a winter home near Enterprise to use as a hunting and fishing preserve. The area stayed pretty quiet until 1962 when the Mackle Brothers bought just over 17,000 acres, filed a planned unit development for a community of 35,143 lots and the area Deltona. The brothers began work immediately and the very first residents moved in 1963. By the end of that year, Deltona already boasted a population of 180 people, school bus service was started and construction began on a golf course. By 1970 Deltona’s population had increased to 4,868 residents and by 1980, had tripled, with about 130 new families per month moving in. Incorporated in 1995 after two failed attempts, a seven member commission was elected. Today, the city has grown to over 300 employees working in the City Manager’s, City Attorney’s and other city government departments.
